How Mackenzie Sampson treated high hematocrit?

Note - This article is written by one of our patients about their experiences with high hematocrit.

My name is Mackenzie Sampson, and I'll talk about my experience dealing with high hematocrit levels in my own life. It all started when I made the decision to get a normal blood test while on a much-needed vacation. I had no idea that this quick exam would point out a brand-new challenge in my life and change the course of my journey. Let me share with you my experiences and how I dealt with having a high hematocrit.

Despite my best efforts to ignore the constant signs of exhaustion and the sporadic dizziness that had been bothering me for some time, I needed to relax and rejuvenate during my holiday. I decided to seek the advice of a nearby doctor and asked for a blood test to look into the underlying source of these persistent problems because I was concerned about them.

I waited for the blood test results while taking use of my free time. I had a gut feeling that something wasn't right. The day finally came when the doctor's office called to let me know that my hematocrit level was increased to 53%. I was confused and anxious after receiving this unexpected news.

A greater hematocrit number, according to the doctor, meant that there were more red blood cells in my system overall. It sparked worries about a potential disorder called polycythemia that could result in complications like blood clots and an elevated risk of cardiac issues. Knowing how serious the issue was, I was resolved to move quickly to treat my condition.

I sought counsel from the local medical staff while I was still on vacation, and they advised that the rise in my hematocrit might be brought on by elements like dehydration or the altitude of the place. They urged me to drink plenty of water, steer clear of physically demanding activities, and keep a close eye on my symptoms.

I made an appointment with my primary care physician as soon as I got home to talk about the test findings and create a strategy for controlling my high hematocrit levels. The doctor suggested additional examinations and directed me to a haematologist to further investigate the underlying problem.

A thorough examination by the haematologist was completed, which included more bloodwork and a bone marrow biopsy. My increased hematocrit levels were found to be caused by primary polycythemia, or polycythemia vera, following a battery of tests. This diagnosis explained why my hematocrit levels were so high: my bone marrow was creating too many red blood cells.

The confirmation of my diagnosis triggered a range of feelings in me. It helped me understand the cause of my problems, but it also required me to accept the fact that I have a chronic illness. I was, however, resolved to meet this issue head-on and successfully control my elevated hematocrit levels.

Together, my medical team and I came up with a thorough treatment strategy. The main goals were to control the symptoms and lower the possibility of polycythemia vera-related consequences. To do this, I regularly had therapeutic phlebotomies, a technique in which blood is carefully removed in order to decrease the quantity of red blood cells and preserve a safe hematocrit level.

I also had phlebotomies and was given prescription drugs to manage my red blood cell production and lower my risk of blood clots. My routine included regular check-ups and blood tests to track my hematocrit levels and assess how well the treatment strategy was working.

More than only medical procedures were necessary to control excessive hematocrit levels; a change in lifestyle was also necessary. I took deliberate attempts to lead a better lifestyle, which included drinking plenty of water, eating a balanced meal, and exercising frequently. These adjustments significantly reduced the stress on my body and promoted general cardiovascular health.

I found emotional comfort in internet forums and support groups where people discussed their stories and provided insightful commentary. My ability to manage the emotional ups and downs of having a chronic illness was aided by forming connections with people going through comparable difficulties. I also went to therapy to deal with the stress and worry I periodically felt from having to manage my high hematocrit levels.

I saw a rise in my hematocrit levels over time with continued commitment to my treatment regimen and lifestyle changes. I felt relieved and my hope was rekindled when they steadily dropped to a safe range.

My experience with high hematocrit levels has been difficult on a physical and psychological level. However, I have discovered how to efficiently manage my disease thanks to tenacity, education, and a strong network of friends and family. It's a never-ending process that calls for commitment and self-care, but it has given me the power to take charge of my health and embrace a happy life.

I hope to spread awareness of the value of frequent check-ups and listening to our bodies by sharing my story. Even on the most idyllic of vacations, unanticipated health problems might occur. We can overcome these obstacles and come out stronger on the other side with the appropriate attitude, access to healthcare, and family support.
