Note - This article is written by one of our patients about their experiences with high hba1c.
Kobe Hendricks here, and I'd like to relate my own experience with being told that I had high HbA1c numbers and how I was able to successfully lower them. This trip has changed me and taught me the importance of taking care of myself and making wise decisions.
It all started with a standard trip to see my doctor. I had been experiencing extremely high levels of exhaustion, continuous thirst, and large, unexplained weight loss. I made the decision to consult a doctor since I was worried about these symptoms. I had no idea how drastically this visit would alter my life.
My HbA1c level was 9 after a battery of tests, the doctor told me, putting me in the diabetic category and indicating poor blood sugar control. I took the news badly. I had always been aware of the dangers of diabetes, but I never thought it would actually happen to me. It was a crucial time, and I knew I had to act right now.

My doctor quickly gave me a prescription for medicine to control my blood sugar levels. She also emphasised the significance of making substantial lifestyle changes. She emphasised the importance of a balanced diet, regular exercise, and efficient stress reduction methods.
I devoted a lot of time to learning about diabetes because I was driven to take back control of my health. I invested time in learning how various foods affect blood sugar levels so that I could make wise decisions. I cut out refined sugars and processed carbs from my diet and replaced them with whole grains, lean proteins, and a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.
Planning my meals became a crucial component of my daily routine. To avoid blood sugar spikes, I used portion control and distributed my meals evenly throughout the day. Online forums allowed me to connect with people going through comparable difficulties, and I found a tonne of support there. We swapped suggestions, recipes, and encouragement for one another to keep on track while we were there.
I adopted regular exercise in addition to changing my diet. I began with easy exercises like walking before advancing to harder workouts. Exercise increased my insulin sensitivity while also aiding in weight management. It gave me a feeling of power and control and became an essential part of my daily routine.
I noticed several improvements over time. My energy levels rose, and I stopped losing weight and was constantly thirsty. I kept a log to chart my progress and look for any patterns while I diligently tracked my blood sugar levels.
My HbA1c values gradually dropped each month. Although it was a slow process with its share of difficulties, my resolve never faltered. Seeing these gains inspired me to keep going, even on the worst days.
Along the way, I gave stress control and self-care first priority. Knowing how much stress affects blood sugar levels, I started incorporating relaxation methods like meditation and deep breathing into my daily routine. Maintaining general health also required getting enough sleep.
Within a year of my diagnosis, I was able to successfully drop my HbA1c readings to a healthier range of 6.5 with persistent effort and an optimistic outlook. It was a remarkable accomplishment and proof of the effectiveness of a personal dedication and lifestyle modifications.
I'm still living a healthy lifestyle today. I am aware that managing diabetes requires constant commitment because it is a lifelong condition. Regular check-ups with my doctor and remaining current on the most recent knowledge and research are crucial parts of my journey.
My viewpoint on health and wellbeing has changed as a result of living with diabetes. I've learned the value of self-care, resiliency, and our capacity to make good changes in our life as a result of it. Even though my diagnosis came with many difficulties, it eventually served as a springboard for personal development and a continual reminder to put my health first.
